DeŸtail : Extended treatment of or attention to
particular items.
Above is the definition of what a
detail is…but what defines the detail itself? Is it the material? The location?
The purpose? I took to the streets of Boston to find out and I am convinced
that as important as the physical aspect of a detail is, the meaning and how
the detail is interacted with is equally important. It doesn’t have to strictly
be a visual experience, but can in fact be physical as well. The slightest
modification of a curb for example, can suggest a place of entry or exit and
therefore bring one’s attention to that particular location.
I sat across from this lowered curb
for a moment to observe if it was in fact used. I was taken back by how many
individuals actually walked “through” this gateway. As easy as it may have been
to step over the curb, students still managed to associate this subtle detail with
how one gets from the path to the grass and vise versa. In terms of this detail’s tale, I’d
say as long as people continue to use it, it is still being written.
