Corey Gibbons - Zibaldone 6

While visiting the waterfront area of Plymouth, MA this weekend, I opened my car door, looked down at the curb to see where I would be stepping as I got out of the car, became aware that I was near the ocean, then looked up to see the ocean in front of me.  Before I actually saw or heard the ocean, I knew it was nearby because I could smell its distinctive scent.  Within this waterfront area, whether the ocean was in view or not, I was inevitably aware of its presence because of the smell that reached beyond the water’s physical limits and pervaded the air.  The water here does not just define this area visually or aurally but through its smell, as well.
