Zibaldone 4

The connection between new and old is often times the hardest detail in a modern renovation. The image below shows the Ira Allen existing building (in brick) with its new addition (in steel and glass). In this portion of the addition the goal was not to break down the existing wall and match the floor plates, but rather to reduce an existing buildings’ facade to a wall of another building. The addition does not cover up the wall or hide it, but rather highlight or frame it. The importance of this detail is then how the new addition does not hide the existing wall by the use of material and connection type. The steel is used as a frame and the glass lets the viewer see the entire building.
