Peter Cataldo - Zibaldone 5

Architecture can make many sounds. Some of those sounds can be loud and grand while others can be quite and intimate. Many of the sounds can be made when an object strikes the Architecture, but most of the sounds are created when other sounds strike the Architecture. The stairwell in Annex North is an example of both. The space itself is made of brick and metal and is very tall. That makes sound echo throughout the space. The water that runs through the supply and return pipes creates the sound of a large waterfall or a small stream depending on the amount of water flowing through the pipes. That sound travels around the space and completely transforms the space from a space of vertical transition to a space to be enjoyed. The sound can slow one down as they hurry from one level to the next.
