Peter Cataldo - Zibaldone 4

This detail shows how a detail can be repeated to help the whole building tell a tale about itself.
Alone, the detail acts as a small ledge that can guide water toward a drain or guide water to drip down to the next ledge as to keep some moisture away from the brick façade.
Pull your view back and repeat the detail up the building, the rest of the structure starts to speak for itself. The lines created by the ledge (along with the placement of windows) tell you where the floor plates of the building are. It also comes clean about its construction. It says, “I’m not gona lie. I’m not 100% masonry. The brick is mostly for exterior purposes, and the real structure lies underneath it.”
Not only can details tell their own stories, they can help the building as a whole tell a different story.
