The sounds a building makes are
comprised from the performance in and around the building itself. Activity that is happening in the building
such us HVAC, lights, machinery and people make a building come to life. This is the same with outside such as the
environment around the building. A
building can also act as a device for sound cancellation. A good instance of
this is the McKim courtyard in the Boston Public Library. This courtyard essentially takes you away
from the city and muffles the sounds of cars and people who are around this
building, which is in the heart of the city.
While never completely quiet, the sounds of a building can go from
anywhere to loud to very quiet, it all depends on how the building is being
performed.
