The building itself doesn’t create
the sounds, but the process to construct and the use of the structure once it
is completed, do. Having lived in Boston for several years now, I have become
accustomed to the sound of pile driving, dump trucks, and the use of other
forms of heavy machinery. In between the insanely high decibel levels of those
things, there are confrontations between workers, orders being given, and
conversations about scheduling, all of which can be characterized as a sound.
Once the construction is complete,
new sounds become present. These sounds can be anything from the HVAC system to
the bell that rings once the elevator reaches the desired floor. So it isn’t necessarily
the building itself that makes sounds, but the activity that goes on in and
around it.
